The SANTA CROCE district is located in the eastern part of the historic center of Florence. Its main monument is undoubtedly the Basilica of Santa Croce with its marble facade located in a central position in the square of the same name. Inside the basilica there are tombs of illustrious artists such as Machiavelli, Alfieri, Michelangelo and the tomb of Galileo Galilei.
The square has a rectangular shape and every year in June it hosts the historic Florentine football, perhaps the most important event in Florence, where the football players from the 4 neighborhoods (represented by the colours, red, green, blue and white) compete in football matches medieval football. In front of the church, there is the marble monument of Dante Alighieri created by Enrico Pazzi in 1865. On the opposite side there is a fountain, a renovation by Giuseppe Manetti from 1816 of a baroque fountain by Pietro Maria Bardi from 1673. The buildings have a scenographic character with protruding surfaces supported by supports (the so-called protruding ones). The Cocchi-Serristori Palace is located on the opposite side of the church and was renovated and expanded over time until the last works dated 1485-1490. The Palazzo dell'Antella is located on the left side of the church and is the result of the unification of several homes over time.
The palace has a unique feature; the spaces between the windows gradually become larger as you move further away from the church, this creates a perspective effect and makes the square seem even larger. Continuing south, crossing the Arno river we find Forte of Belvedere and on a hill overlooking Piazzale Michelangelo. Then moving south-west we arrive in the Santo Spirito area. Going north-east instead we arrive in the San Giovanni district.
